Nefarious steals the newly-repaired Dimensionator and uses it to take himself, Ratchet, and Clank to an alternate dimension where he is the emperor he’s always wanted to be. If you’ve played Rift Apart already, you know what happens next. Clank secretly recovers the Dimensionator and manages to repair it sometime between Into the Nexus and Rift Apart. In the final moments of the game, Ratchet tells Clank that he doesn’t want to repair the Dimensionator or find the lombaxes because he has everything he needs in this universe already. The device breaks, once again dashing Ratchet’s hope of finding his people. In this story, Ratchet and Clank have to repair the Dimensionator in order to banish yet another villain, Mr. In the ensuing battle with Tachyon, the Dimensionator is destroyed and with it any hope that Ratchet will be able to find the surviving lombaxes. When Tachyon returns in Tools of Destruction, Ratchet finds the Dimensionator and learns the truth about the lombaxes’ fate and his family history. Ratchet lived his whole life believing he was the only lombax. Ratchet’s father, Kaden, was the protector of the Dimensionator when Ratchet was just a baby. In case you need a refresher on the Dimensionator, it is an ancient lombax device that has the power to open portals to different dimensions. When Clank presents Ratchet with a repaired Dimensionator just moments into Rift Apart, it’s made clear that it is indeed a continuation of the original series.

Before the release of Rift Apart, it was unclear whether it would serve as sequel to PS4 remake, which would position the remake as a reboot for the series, or if it would pick up where Into the Nexus left off.

We have heard many, many stories about how developers have burned the candle at all possible ends to hit targets and release games, taking a huge toll in the process through crunch. And they didn’t crunch to hit their original deadline. It almost goes without saying these days that most major games are delayed at least once or twice before release, anywhere from weeks to months to a year, but Ratchet and Clank never was. And then its Jrelease date was set back in February. Rift Apart was announced exactly a year before this Friday’s release date, June 11, 2020.

I’ve also now realized that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart was also…never delayed.
